The Glory of the Lord

(In the lead-up to our vote on our new elder nominees, we’ll have extra opportunities to see their gifts in action, including in these devotionals.)

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea - Habakkuk 2:14

This verse comes right after and before a series of divine warnings, directed at the arrogant, the violent, the greedy, the drunkards and the immoral. It’s a reminder that when looking at a broken world filled with evil, the evil is temporary and God’s ultimate victory is permanent.

The writer doesn’t say the world might be filled; he says it will be filled. The writer uses the example of water covering. When water covers something, it gets into every little crack. There is nothing it doesn’t get into. The knowledge of the glory of the Lord will be absolute. There won’t be an atom that is not touched by His glory.

Philippians 2:10-11 tells us, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

May we be used as a church and as individuals to spread the light and knowledge of Jesus Christ, as we live our lives to glorify our Lord.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8).

Our calling may not be as personal as Isaiah’s, but as Christians we are all called.
